Why was the Explorer voted the 2018 Disc of the Year? Straight flight path and controlled glide, that’s what the Explorer brings. Designed to be the workhorse for all kinds of accurate fairway drives. This stable and versatile fairway driver is smooth out of the hand and has a clean stable flight.

Opto-X Plastic: Opto-X is a premium blend of plastics that provides a stiffer feel, increased durability, and more overstable flights compared to regular Opto.

Glimmer effect: Colour shift combined with a glimmer effect.

Team Series: This is a specialised fundraiser disc and proceeds from the sale will benefit the Latitude 64° team player her/his touring. Every purchase helps to support each player, so don't forget to pick one or more up!

Limited Collection/Design: This special design is created by our talented graphic designers, and hot stamped with foil on the disc. These discs are in limited amount and will not be restocked regularly.

A good combination of Explorer-like glide with added beef

I don't throw as far as Adam (cf. his review) but after a fieldwork where I compared this to the Opto-X Explorer 2022, Neutron Terra and my fairly used Opto Glimmer Explorer. I've noticed that this run (let's call it Explorer-X 21) is glidier than the 2022 run (which has 4.5 glide compared to the 5 glide from this one, whilst the Terra is closer to 4). Now when it comes to turn, all of these explorers will hold the turn (flat or anny) until the fade kicks in (the Terra will fade earlier than the others).
I've not tried an Evader but I can tell, this disc has 2.75 fade (very close to the Terra but not as beefy) compared to the 2022 run which is has a solid 2.5 fade.

It's a great disc (although not in the position to kick the Terra out of my bag).

Looking for an Explorer OS? Or a glidey Firebird-ish 7 speed?

I've reviewed the Explorer in its Opto, Retro, and Gold incarnations, and it is absolutely a 5-star disc. In the hands of a decent player, it is a workable and stable-to-overstable driver that covers you from 50m to 125m with dependable precision. I've messed with all kinds of potential replacements like the Evader, Instinct, Teebird3, FX2, and Mantis, and it still refuses to fall out of the bag.

Why, though? The Evader "feels" better to grip, the Instinct holds a straighter line, the Teebird3 glides further, the FX2 is more stable in the wind and the Mantis can shape some weirdly magical lines ... So why can't any of them tempt me away from the Explorer? I might argue that none of them score as highly in all categories I care about, but the honest core reason is that the Explorer just works better on the course. The results, as always, spoke for themselves.

You might say that is purely subjective and down to how I throw, full stop. OK, but you will notice that almost all the Latitude pros bag it, even Ricky, who arguably should be pushing harder on his signature Evader given they are almost exactly the same for flight numbers.

Granted, the pros tend to play with the most overstable versions, and this is one of them. And I don't bag it. Reasons? It is just too much hard work to keep it in the air, even with what I consider to be a healthy amount of arm speed. I can comfortably hit a 120m backhand with an Explorer Gold on a hyzerflip line. I can barely get this one to 90m unless I put it on anny. It also skips like a stabbed wallaby, which can be fun I suppose?

Perhaps it needs seasoning via another 300 throws to start showing me some love, but OMG this kind of overstability belongs on a Firebird. Unless ... that's the idea? Get rid of the other meathooks, buy this one and keep the same grip and hand feels as your fairways? Hmm ... let me get back to you in 6 months!
